Beschreibung

It is Shakespeare's last work and, for many, the culmination of his entire creative process. An allegorical, utopian, realistic, romantic, pastoral, and mythical piece, it presents itself as a wonderful tale that holds some enigma or elusive meaning. Its composition seems inspired by a famous shipwreck that occurred in 1609 near Bermuda. The ship, believed to be lost, was saved and lived for a time on a paradise-like island. In the midst of the debate about the discovery and colonization of the New World, Shakespeare addresses in his work the issues of relationships with other cultures and the prospects for coexistence or subjugation; the encounter of the civilized with the savage; the primal and instinctive versus the rational; the possibility of creating a community with a new social order based on different values, and the obstacles to achieving it. But The Tempest is also an extreme reflection on the boundaries between fiction and reality. Inexhaustible in scenic possibilities, Shakespeare left his final word on the magic of theater in it. Translation by Ängel-Luis Pujante, who received the National Award for Best Translation for this work in 1998.
