As the title suggests, midwife Ruth Ehrhardt explores in her book, in a very understandable style, how to meet the basic needs of women in labor. She also considers the subtle influence of environmental factors on childbirth and what those accompanying the birth should be aware of. Drawing on the work of Michel Odent, she focuses in a very simple and comprehensible way on the physiology of childbirth, the birth itself, and the postpartum period. The book is intended for expectant mothers and those who accompany women to births, whether in the role of a caregiver (doctor, midwife, doula) or partner. The book was originally written with the idea that it would be a simple brochure to be left in hospital waiting rooms in the hope that the 'right' person would find it... it has since been translated into nearly 20 languages (most recently into Czech!) and continues to spread its wings of love around the world.
