For some, a great hero; for others, a cold-blooded criminal. In modern Czech history, it is probably impossible to find another figure that evokes such conflicting opinions and passions. In 2023, Josef Mašín celebrated his ninety-first birthday despite the fact that he should have been gone for seventy years, during which society has been practically equally divided in its assessment of his actions. The story of the last living member of the anti-communist resistance group is not only gripping, though that alone would be enough for a book. The story raises questions about the extent to which and at what cost it is legitimate to fight for the values on which the free world stands. And while in the free world it is entirely undesirable to take justice into one's own hands, the same rule apparently cannot be followed in a world where justice does not exist. This is the fundamental message stemming from the fate of Josef Mašín, which has not yet been told in such a complete breadth.
