The author processed a shocking twenty-four thousand pages of American government documents, declassified on May 29, 2021, by the U.S. National Security Archive, with which the author has collaborated for many years. They concern when American presidents considered using nuclear bombs against the USSR and its socialist satellites during international crises. The first case was the so-called Berlin Crisis in 1948. The list of targets included sites in what was then Czechoslovakia, including Prague. Other moments of similar considerations occurred during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the Suez Crisis, the dual wars in Lebanon, and others up until 1975. The book covers all the secret negotiations regarding what security guarantees and independence would be provided to the newly formed Ukrainian Republic if it renounced nuclear weapons stationed on its territory – at that time, Ukraine was the third strongest nuclear power. The author also draws on personal testimonies, as he lived in Kyiv at the time and befriended Ukrainian presidents and Foreign Minister Anatoliy Zlenko, who informed him in detail about the ongoing negotiations and Ukrainian resistance to such an agreement.
