It utilizes the work of an exceptional artistic personality - Dutch designer, photographer, and filmmaker Paul Schuitema, placing it within the context of contemporary trends and movements observed in the broader Central European region. Above all, it presents a translation of his key essay and recalls the natural connections between Czechoslovak and Dutch avant-garde movements during the interwar period.
Paul Schuitema is one of the important and formative figures in the European scene of the first half of the 20th century. He became renowned not only as a practitioner but also as a theorist, entrepreneur, and connector of cultural and social environments. His journey to Czechoslovakia in 1936 is particularly memorable. Schuitema visited at the invitation of František Kalivoda to lecture in Brno and Prague on New Photography, the use of photography in graphic design, and Dutch film avant-garde.
