As a young man, Ephraim became a disciple of St. Joseph the Hesychast - a well-known figure on Mount Athos - who gathered young monks around him, and under his guidance, they succeeded in the work of asceticism and spiritual experience. Later, the spiritual students of St. Joseph became the restorers of the ancient Orthodox monastic tradition known as hesychasm. After the passing of St. Joseph, Ephraim became the abbot of the Holy Mountain Monastery of St. Philotheus. However, he completed his life journey in the USA, where he encountered a great spiritual hunger among the local Orthodox Christians. He thus dedicated the rest of his life to guiding Western people on the path of spiritual life, prayer, asceticism, and the knowledge of God. He remained in the USA at his initially established monastery of St. Anthony the Great. On the American continent, he gradually founded and built another twenty monasteries.
