The seventeenth volume of Wandering Through Czech History focuses in its first part on the history of German and Hebrew literature written in Prague. It brings to light the stories of Prague authors who achieved truly global fame, particularly Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Egon Erwin Kisch, and Gustav Meyrink. In the following chapters, the figures of great Czech poets from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries will emerge: Jan Svatopluk Machar, Otokar Březina, and others. The book uncovers neglected relationships and facts that academic literary historiography tends to overlook. It portrays revered classics with their artistic endeavors, but also with all their good and bad traits, loves, and hates. The text is based on thorough study of materials and does not neglect distant contexts or developmental milestones of contemporary literary creation. The book entertains but also serves as an attractively presented overview of literature from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, for example, for the needs of high schools, and can greatly facilitate the maturity exam in Czech literature.
