This Czech-language book tells the life story of three doctor friends, whose lives are shaped by the real experiences of their patients. In one scene, Jirka awakens in a hospital bed to find two strangers looking down at him. He can see and hear them, but cannot speak or move. As his panic rises, the nurse notices his dangerously rapid heartbeat and the doctor orders an injection. Unable to explain that he is conscious, Jirka can only watch the helpless faces around him before slipping back into sleep.
