The book discusses the withdrawal of the Serbian army and nation from their occupied homeland in 1915 and the months-long march over Serbian and Albanian mountains under incredibly harsh conditions, during which the Serbian nation experienced one of the largest exoduses in its history. The number of missing, dead, and killed was 243,877 people. French Marshal Joseph Joffre said about it: "The circumstances under which the withdrawal of the Serbian army and nation took place surpass all horrors ever recorded in history."
