Beschreibung
The uncompromising battle of German intelligence services against their counterparts from the Allied powers between 1914 and 1918 became the foundation of modern espionage methods. Intelligence information began to play a crucial role in determining the course of events not only on the fronts and battlefields of World War I but also in its behind-the-scenes dealings. The experiences of German agents and operatives from that time continue to be drawn upon and learned from today, and their stories are reflected in many modern spy novels by Ian Fleming, Frederick Forsyth, and John Le Carré. The first part of the publication captures the emergence of modern intelligence services and, alongside legendary figures such as the head of military intelligence Walther Nicolai, also chronicles the fates of some lesser-known spies, such as a native of Žilina known by the code name A17, the never-caught 'mole' within British MI5, and the so-called Ullmo affair from the opium dens of the French war base in Toulon.
