Beschreibung
One of the essential elements of the transformation of settlements in the 19th century was sanitary infrastructure, the creation of which turned these communities into truly modern cities. It can never be emphasized enough how much sewage systems, alongside gas and later electric lighting, transformed the character of Euro-Atlantic cities. Sewage systems remain an extremely undervalued topic in urban history. The focus of the publication is the presentation of the rarest book on sewage from the historical collection of the National Technical Library (NTK), Die Canalisation von Berlin, by the creator of the urban structure of the German metropolis, James Hobrecht. The book is conceived as an atlas, allowing the viewer to navigate the labyrinth of the underground counterpart to the above-ground city. The aim is to showcase the underestimated role of the triumph of 19th-century engineering in shaping the spatial composition of cities in the 19th and 20th centuries, supported by books from the historical collection of NTK. This technical triumph of the previous century is presented here in a range of cultural-historical and artistic contexts. The publication 'The Guts of Cities' features works by Viktorie Rybáková (aka Diamanta Popelky), Daniel Hrdý, Miroslav Urban, Jindřich Špicner, Viktor Karlík, and Michal Cihlář. The publication is released on the occasion of the same name...
