Autumn 1974 in the mining town of Ashburn in northwest England... the last autumn of our childhood innocence. As thirteen-year-olds, we loved autumn. Nights sparkling with stars or, conversely, shrouded in fog so thick it could be cut. Spooky Halloween stories, burning effigies on Guy Fawkes Night, the vision of Christmas. When you're thirteen, you experience all of this in a state of great excitement. However, that year we were also gripped by fear; a murderer began to wreak havoc in Ashburn with the onset of autumn. Under the cover of darkness, in the thickest fog, someone was lurking, choosing our peers as victims. In practically every town, there are whispers of some murderous specter. In our case, an ancient legend was connected to the coal mine and red clogs. And back in '74, we intensely wondered if the clattering that occasionally echoed in the fog during that tragic time was somehow related to this specter...
