Bohumil Hrabal, the writer and doctor of law, worked in a number of professions, including warehouseman, railway dispatcher, insurance agent, steelworks laborer, and waste-paper packer. The thinking of an author associated with exuberant storytelling and pub anecdotes also had a spiritual dimension. What attentive readers had previously only sensed is confirmed by the recent discovery of recordings of Hrabal’s Advent talks at the parish church in Libice nad Cidlinou. In these talks, given when he was already in his seventies, Hrabal reveals a rare sensitivity to the sacred dimension of life and explains his rejection of a legal career and his inclination toward people at the bottom of society as his path of a “little Christ.” The book also includes a contribution by Pavel Hošek, a professor of religious studies at Charles University’s Protestant Theological Faculty, who systematically explores the spiritual dimension of literature, including the works of Jaroslav Foglar, E. T. Seton, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis. The contents are in Czech.
