Beschreibung
The monumental novel "The Sorrow of Belgium" (Het verdriet van België, 1983) presents a wide panorama of the fates of one family from a West Flemish town from the time of Hitler's rise to power until the end of World War II. This seminal work of Dutch literature can be read on many levels: as an autobiographical bildungsroman, as a story of the Flemish national revival leading to collaboration with the German occupiers, as a novel about writing a novel, as a metatextual work connecting references to classical world literature, and as a psychological novel illustrating not only dysfunctional interpersonal relationships but also the disintegration of society as a whole. Last but not least, it can be perceived as a war novel, although it does not view the war through dramatic twists from the battlefields but rather through the ordinary lives of people, whose smallness the author mercilessly dissects with a sharp knife.
