Mors vincit omnia.
Death conquers all.
London 1883. The veil between the living and the dead has thinned. The media with violet eyes communicate with spirits under the watchful eye of the Royal Spokesperson, and sixteen-year-old Silas Bell would rather gouge out his violet eyes than become the obedient wife of the Spokesperson. According to his mother, he will be married by the end of the year. It doesn't matter that it took him ten years and a number of teachers to learn to hide his autism, that he practices surgical procedures on butchered pigs from the slaughterhouse, or that he is a boy, even though the whole world insists otherwise and sees him as a girl.
After his attempt to escape an arranged marriage fails, Silas is diagnosed with Veil Disease – a mysterious illness that drives women with violet eyes to madness – and is sent to Braxton Girls' School and Sanatorium. The facility is cold, the caregivers ruthless, and the students either blossom into desirable brides or disappear. So when Silas begins to be approached by the spirits of missing students asking for help, he decides to delve into the depths of Braxton and expose its rotten insides to the world – if the school doesn't break him first.
