These words begin Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina, one of the most famous psychological works in the history of literature. The central axis of the novel is the fateful love affair of the beautiful Anna, married to a high-ranking government official Alexei Karenin, with the young attractive officer Alexei Vronsky and its tragic outcome. Against the backdrop of the story of the titular heroine, her lover, husband, and son, as well as many other interconnected human destinies, the author paints a holistic picture of Russian society in the second half of the 19th century, which is significantly changing with the advent of the industrial revolution and modernization, and whose transformations fatefully reflect in the lives of the novel's heroes. Anna Karenina is, however, primarily a profound timeless reflection on morality, truthfulness, and authenticity in interpersonal relationships, as well as on the search for and (not) finding the meaning of life.
