This Czech-language science-fiction novel begins forty thousand years ago, when humanity builds a fleet of arkships and flees a dying Earth in search of a new home among the stars. Travelling at almost the speed of light, the ships cross immense distances over several generations. Many disappear forever in the void, but one fleet discovers habitable worlds far away in the Centauri star cluster. Thousands of years later, Centauri flourishes, and the first settlers have evolved into advanced beings known as the Celestials. They have divided themselves into five Dominions, the most powerful being the Crown, an alliance of five families ruling vast areas of the star cluster. When later arks arrive and their passengers awaken from hibernation, they discover that the Celestials rule with cruelty and ruthlessness. Finn, born on a world governed by the Crown Dominion, refuses to accept this oppression. He has never known Earth but dreams of the possibilities beyond his home. He becomes a Pilgrim, joining a group determined to seek new opportunities and a future for humanity.
