In Sweden, the motorcycle club Hells Angels MC has been operating since 1993, when the first branch was established in Malmö. This was 15 years later than the first branch in Northern Europe, which was founded in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1978. Another chapter followed in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1980, followed by the Danish Trondheim in 1992. During this time, this international organization has contributed to a fundamental change in Swedish crime.
Before 1993, when HA appeared in Sweden, the concept of gang crime was practically unknown in this country. Criminals certainly operated in groups in the past, but they hardly had any general power claims or sought territorial expansion.
With Hells Angels MC came the struggle for numerical superiority. From about eight to ten members, the sphere grew over two decades to approximately 500 people, half of whom are members, probationary members, and 'hangarounds', and the other half are so-called official supporters. With their clubhouses in Malmö, Helsingborg, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Karlstad, Luleå, Uppsala, and Hessleholm, the Hells Angels sphere is by far the largest chain of criminal groups.
