Set in the 1980s, the 1990s and a strange timeless aftermath, this Czech-language collection contains five stories linked not by time, place or protagonists, but by people living on the margins. They have often driven themselves into a corner and struggle with cowardice and a fear of genuine closeness. Love and intimacy offer neither escape nor fulfilment, instead becoming sources of anxiety, power games and missed opportunities. The characters include a man looking back regretfully on his first love, a group of children fleeing a boarding school, people who have withdrawn from life into an open-air museum in the forest, and young people from a big city experimenting with life and drugs. Martin Uhlíř’s focused prose is playful and dark, yet always attentive to delicately rendered detail, convincingly conveying their longing for life and love.
