Since 1990, neonatology has been a recognized specialized field of pediatric medicine focused on the care of both physiological and pathological newborns. Thanks to improving knowledge of pathophysiological processes, technical advancements, enhanced quality of intensive care, and better treatment and nursing procedures, there has been a significant improvement in neonatal mortality and morbidity in our republic. These indicators have remained at a world-class level for several years, and we can be appropriately proud of them. Unfortunately, not every child is born healthy or on time. The spectrum of neonatal diseases is very broad, encompassing both common and very rare conditions, diseases related to prematurity, congenital developmental defects, infections, hypoxic injuries, and various types of hereditary metabolic disorders. ***** To raise awareness in this field, Chief Physician Milena Dokoupilová has been organizing annual professional conferences titled 'Days of Neonatal Case Studies' since 2016, which address a wide range of issues concerning newborns from the 30th week of pregnancy.
