This book is a comprehensive treatise on the issue of melanoma, the most malignant skin tumor arising from melanocytes. The work discusses the origin and development of healthy melanocytes, which are derivatives of the neural crest. Melanocytes are classified as originating from neuroectoderm. The complex process of melanocyte development requires a specific microenvironment and a number of signaling molecules, which are also involved in the development of melanoma, particularly in its progression. These mechanisms are very similar and differ only in the context of the given tissue and the pathology that, unlike embryogenesis, leads to tumor formation. The book further describes the biology and development of melanoma from healthy melanocytes, the various clinical variants, and their clinical and histological diagnosis. Great emphasis is placed on the complex tumor microenvironment of melanoma, which supports tumor growth and the establishment of metastases. The tumor microenvironment consists not only of tumor melanocytes but also of non-tumor cells such as tumor-associated fibroblasts, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, and macrophages.
