Beschreibung
The history of the railway in Jihlava is rich and full of interesting events and milestones. Its beginnings date back to 1871 when the Austrian Northwest Railway brought its tracks to the city from Vienna. It built a large station with technical facilities, and after the tracks of the Czech-Moravian Transversal Railway were laid from Jihlava to Southern Bohemia in 1887, a second station was added closer to the city center. By connecting both stations with a bridge over the Jihlava River valley, the city became a railway hub, and the railway viaduct became one of the symbols of the city. The publication is composed of historical photographs collected, organized, and supplemented with insightful texts by Jihlava patriot and railway promoter Mr. Richard Cila. In the book, we will look at technical monuments and historical buildings associated with the railway. Many of them represent valuable testimonies to the development of railway transport and technology. Bridges, station buildings, and other infrastructure are not only functional elements of the transport system but also significant cultural and historical monuments. Jihlava and the railway are inseparably linked, and their shared story is also the story of many people who connected their professional lives with the railway.
