Beschreibung
The first wave of cold water swimmers – initially considered crazy – surged in the Czech lands as early as 1923. It was pioneered by Alfréd Nikodém, a Prague jeweler, sportsman, and cold water swimming influencer during the period between the First and Second World Wars. He was determined, persistent, in his own way both iron and gold. Thus, he was the exact opposite of the contemporary author of the book, who has become complacent and often has to persuade himself to swim. ***** Journalist Jan David has been swimming in the Vltava for the third year now, despite the freezing temperatures. He plunges into the waves, but also into the forgotten and reviving history of the inspiring Alfréd and the stories of other great cold water swimmers. He tells himself that if he can manage the December swim at the Alfréd Nikodém Memorial, then almost anyone can. With humor and ease, he presents reports, interviews, and historical articles about the tradition of winter swimming in our country, comparing cold water swimming a hundred years ago and today.
