In the summer of 1976, Palestinian and German terrorists hijacked an Air France plane to Uganda. They carried out a selection reminiscent of the Holocaust, releasing non-Israeli passengers while keeping around one hundred Jews as hostages. The terrorists issued an ultimatum and, protected by Uganda’s dictator, felt safe deep in the heart of Africa. They were mistaken. Israel refused to submit and decided to rescue the hostages. Within 48 hours, an audacious and seemingly impossible plan was created. Sayeret Matkal, Israel’s elite commando unit, undertook a risky mission thousands of kilometres from home and achieved the nearly impossible.
