Young squire Jan of Trocnov arrives at the royal court to learn everything necessary for future court service, just like other young nobles. However, his peers avoid him not only because they come from prominent noble families but also because he is 'marked' – he is one-eyed. When it turns out that he is a better archer than any of them, Václav of Luxembourg chooses him as a teacher in archery. Gradually, a friendship begins to develop between them that will last a lifetime. When Emperor Charles IV departs for the imperial diet in Frankfurt, where Václav is elected king of the Romans while his father is still alive, Jan of Trocnov accompanies them. After the old Gregor Žižka dies, Jan leaves Prague not only to say goodbye to his father but also to begin fulfilling a secret mission entrusted to him by Václav. Will he succeed in completing it while simultaneously falling in love with Kateřina of Čeřejov?
