The author and his wife Delores live on a farm in the Lillooet River valley, flowing through one of the countless valleys of the Coast Mountains in British Columbia. Some stories take place on their homestead, which spans 35 hectares of meadows, mountain slopes, and adjacent beaver ponds. Here, surrounded by untouched nature, they built a cabin, a barn, and wood sheds. A large garden, an orchard, a beehive, a chicken coop, and a herd of alpacas and llamas provide them with most of their living needs. On the mountain slopes above the house, a large herd of deer winters, supplying meat for the entire year. Here, high above the valley, the author built a hunting cabin, which is the subject of the stories "The Cabin" and "The Path Through Darkness and Snow." All of this is watched over by a large black dog named Buddy, who has returned bloodied several times from chasing wolves and bears. He is a smart and brave dog. What brought them to this remote mountain valley? It was a desire for independence from the hurried civilization, an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and the endless race of life that led nowhere. How did the author get from a small Moravian village to the banks of the Lillooet River among wolves and bears? It was a youthful desire for adventure and also curiosity to follow in the footsteps of his two uncles who emigrated to British Columbia in 1910. Of course, he did not find them, but...
