Beschreibung
The latest novel by writer Iva Tajovská takes us to the beginning of the 20th century, to the time of the first aviators and aviation promoters like Jan Kašpar and Eugen Čihák. A lesser-known but all the more interesting figure is Božena Laglerová, who was the first Czech woman and the thirteenth woman in the world to pilot an airplane. The takeoffs and landings of her 'butterfly' serve as a metaphor for the events of her life. Božena initially struggles with men's prejudices against women in technical fields and with her mother's protests, who pressures her to fulfill her role. However, the young woman ultimately asserts herself and sets off with her airplane to Cuba, Haiti, and finally to New York. Her life is marked by constant overcoming of obstacles, a lack of money, and a lack of support from both family and society. Tajovská sensitively and empathetically depicts how this young woman, incredibly modern and emancipated for her time, manages to rise again and continue her efforts, even when the situation often seems hopeless.
