Beschreibung

The partially autobiographical novel by Czech-German writer Karel von Wetzky is set shortly after World War II. Twelve-year-old Heinrich-Adolf is to be relocated to Germany with his mother, so they set off to a center in northern Moravia that gathers Germans from the Czech lands designated for resettlement. By coincidence and due to a bureaucratic error, they end up in a town where surviving Jews preparing for their journey to Palestine are concentrated. Thanks to her expertise, the mother finds work here, and for the boy, later called Gojele, a period full of twists, difficult trials, but also a time filled with friendship, selfless help, and adventure begins. The worldview instilled in the young hero by the Nazi ideology at school clashes with the previously unknown and completely different world of the Jews, their traditions, language, religion, and even cuisine. Despite the deeply rooted mutual distorted perceptions of each other's worlds and the animosity that often escalates into hatred, the German boy finds a way to connect with the Jewish residents of the town – and they with him – learning their language and penetrating a culture that will influence him for life.
