Beschreibung
Mavis Gallant was born in Canada and lived in France, where she died in 2014 at the age of 91. Throughout her life, she devoted herself almost exclusively to a single genre, the short story, with her works primarily published in The New Yorker. In her concise, sharp prose, the author explores the theme of emigration – both internal and external. Having spent most of her life outside her homeland, she has a deep, human understanding of the uprooted and lonely characters in her stories. At the same time, with a sense of brevity and sharp irony, she breaks conventions and established forms of the genre. Mavis Gallant's masterful short stories are compared in significance to the works of Chekhov and Henry James and have profoundly influenced an entire generation of writers. Alongside Alice Munro, she is regarded as one of the most significant Canadian writers of the 20th century. The collection Late Returnee contains thirteen novellas and short stories translated by Martin Pokorný and introduces this significant author to the Czech reader for the very first time.
