The story of a man who miraculously acquires a fairy-tale fortune and just as quickly loses it takes place in the 1990s and, like all of Kratochvil's novels, is set in Brno, in precisely described specific houses, streets, and places, while inviting readers into the enchanting worlds of his unique imagination. At the same time, it reflects the clash of good and evil in the contemporary world. ***** The new novel Klošár is accompanied by seven short stories. Some of them (The Prayer of the Tsar's Nurse, About the Marketeer, The Case of the Well-Locked Room) are new, while others are nearly forgotten and appear in this book in revised form after many years (The Pigeon Killer, The Eve of the Seance, The Case of the Inappropriately Placed Chance). The last story, The Devil's Hoof, deals with the fates of writers during normalization and after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
