Take a glimpse into the incredible fates of those condemned to life in frozen Siberia. Here, subjects inconvenient to both the Tsarist and Stalinist regimes were sent into exile, among them writers like Dostoevsky, Chernyshevsky, Sakharov, Solzhenitsyn, and many others, as well as scientists who, as prisoners, outlined projects for splitting the atom, space flights, or even atomic bombs. Hundreds of Czechs and Slovaks also appeared in Siberia, having come here, escaped, or been exiled. About seventy thousand of our legionnaires fought their way along the Trans-Siberian Railway to Vladivostok. Conversely, Russian families voluntarily left for Siberia, seeking refuge for religious reasons to maintain their faith: some of them, like eighty-year-old Agafja, still survive in Siberian solitude today. Builders of waterworks and other projects were lured here by adventure, huge earnings, and youthful enthusiasm, as were geologists for whom Siberia hides the entire Mendeleev periodic table of elements.
