The millennium of Czech history between the ninth and nineteenth centuries is marked by a series of battles, which their contemporaries already sensed were crucial historical crossroads. Our ancestors shed blood for their homes and families, their faith, oath, and way of life, thereby significantly contributing to the fact that even today we can live in our own, with our own, and largely in our own way. As befits a small nation in the middle of the continent, these are most often defensive battles, where the locals face the overwhelming force of invaders with the knowledge that everything is at stake. To a lesser extent, we encounter bloody clashes of self-destructive civil wars, which, under certain circumstances, could have been the first step towards lasting peace and restoration. The book presents a collection of thirteen significant battles, which, although predominantly known by name, are shrouded in the dark veil of the unknown and unexplored regarding their background, broad contexts, and consequences for the development of our state and nation.
