This modest work about the life and work of Karel Domenico Cristofori, known as Mark of Aviana, was written on the occasion of the anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Vienna. The author is Catholic priest František Janovský. Mark of Aviana, a European, a Christian, and a beatified monk of the Capuchin order in the Catholic Church, is respectfully regarded as the guardian spirit of Austria. Through his spiritual and moral authority, Mark was able to convince Germans and Slavs to forget their mutual disputes and differences and unite against the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683. He also contributed to maintaining the morale of often numerically weaker Christian armies in battles against the Ottoman army at Budapest (1684–86), Neuhäusel (1685), Mohács (1687), and Belgrade (1688). The Czech Capuchins write on their website kapucini.cz about Mark of Aviana that 'after the defeat of Islam, he fought for unity among the nations of Europe and for the Christian identity of the European continent.' Vojtěch Merunka, chairman of the Slavic Union, said: This simple monk thus became a symbol of European unity and the effort for its spiritual salvation.
