During his visit to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1991, American President George Herbert Walker Bush briefly visited the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, where he delivered a speech to the members of the local Ukrainian Supreme Soviet, which we present here translated into Czech. President Bush's speech angered and infuriated many Ukrainian nationalists and American 'hawks.' During his visit to Ukraine, President Bush also refused to meet with advocates for Ukraine's independence and warned Ukrainian politicians against 'suicidal (Ukrainian) nationalism.' 'Freedom, however, is not the same as independence. Americans will not support those who seek independence to replace distant tyranny with local despotism. They will not help those who promote suicidal nationalism based on ethnic hatred,' declared Bush before Ukrainian politicians.
