Beschreibung

This Czech-language book examines the Russian Federation’s direct military attack on Ukraine as the culmination of many years of political conflicts between Russia and the West, rather than as the result of a sudden political shift at the beginning of 2022. It traces the roots of the war to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s first presidential term, from 2000 to 2008, and considers the ideological convictions of the Russian elite and their influence on Russian policy. The book describes Putin’s earlier relations with the United States and the West, including his friendly meetings with George Walker Bush, before focusing on his speech at the Munich Security Conference in early 2007. In that speech, Putin openly declared that Russia would no longer remain silent or retreat, but would oppose the expansion of Western influence into what it regarded as its sphere of influence. Later events, including Russia’s intervention in Georgia in 2008, showed that these warnings were meant seriously. The book makes this important Putin speech available to Czech readers.
