Personified amphibians, often shown with props from the plant and animal worlds, take on various human traits and vices along with the skills and professions associated with them. They may provoke laughter or disgust, appearing as a frog lout, a hussar, a theremin player, an alcohol-loving frog or dancing frogs. This Czech-language book by Jan Melena presents a unique collection of sixty-nine linocuts combining many unusual elements. It brings together an original iconographic subject with the book genre known as the “wordless novel,” while its distinctive graphics connect influences from Central European culture with artistic traditions of the Far East.
