Gregory David Roberts was born in 1952 in Melbourne, Australia, where he studied philosophy and started a family. He dealt with post-divorce trauma through heroin, which resulted in a series of armed bank robberies. After escaping from prison and moving to Bombay, he was caught while smuggling heroin in Germany and was deported back to Australia, where he served the remainder of his sentence. In prison, he began writing the autobiographical novel Shantaram, but his manuscript was destroyed by guards twice. In 2003, his "modern-day Papillon" was finally published and millions were sold worldwide.
