The main character of the predominantly autobiographical novel Shantaram arrives in Bombay, unbeknownst to anyone that his arrival was preceded by an escape from a heavily guarded Australian prison, where he was serving a nineteen-year sentence for armed robberies. He robbed to satisfy his heroin addiction, which developed after his family fell apart. He arrives in India with a little money, false documents, no plans for the future, and meets his fateful love of his life. However, further twists of fate lead him back to prison and subsequently onto the path of a gangster, smuggler, and fighter in the Afghan war. Gregory David Roberts was born in 1952 in Melbourne, Australia, where he studied philosophy and started a family. He dealt with post-divorce trauma through heroin, which resulted in a series of armed bank robberies. After escaping from prison and moving to Bombay, he was caught while smuggling heroin in Germany and was deported back to Australia, where he served the remainder of his sentence. In prison, he began writing the autobiographical novel Shantaram, but his manuscript was destroyed by guards twice. In 2003, his "modern-day Papillon" was finally published and millions were sold worldwide.
