Beschreibung
Fourteen-year-old Ben has just lost his mother, who dies suddenly despite the emergency responders’ efforts. He must now cope not only with his own grief, but also with his younger brother’s unusual way of mourning and his father’s withdrawal and silence. In this Czech-language novel, German writer Stefanie Höfler tells Ben’s powerful story in the first person. The events unfold during the first week after his mother’s sudden death, with occasional memories of the past. The book portrays the characters and the process of grieving, from the initial shock through to reconciliation after the funeral. It also shows that when help does not come from the grieving family, it may be found in a friend who has gone through a similar experience. The story follows Ben as he deals with painful and confusing feelings, including a rebellious attempt with his younger brother to defile their mother’s coffin by painting it, because they believe she would have liked it better in colour.
