The fourth century BC is coming to an end, and the vast empire of Alexander the Great is crumbling. New successor kingdoms are emerging, and the era of so-called Hellenism begins, during which Greek culture spreads throughout the known world. In this time and space unfolds the intricate story of a young temple singer named Korrhagos, nicknamed Eumelos for his melodious singing. His novel journey begins in his native Bactrian Zariasp, from where he departs with a trading caravan to explore the world, and it is a long and adventurous journey. A significant stop along the way is the then-modern Egyptian metropolis of Alexandria, where Korrhagos meets a mysterious girl, the priestess Beneret, and learns about his surprising origins. From the urban prosperity, guided by fickle fortune, he finds himself as a enslaved rower on a Phoenician pirate ship, where he becomes close to a mysterious young man named Alexander, who suffers the same fate. A rebellion on the ship brings them freedom and a new existence, this time in ancient Athens, where both friends become stars of the acting troupe of the famous playwright Menander. Fortune smiles upon them in love, and the missing Beneret re-enters the scene. The Athenian idyll is unexpectedly disrupted by power intrigues, and Korrhagos becomes an outlaw, but he finds refuge with the Macedonian king...
