Beschreibung
Thirteen-year-old Memesa has run away from home. At the end of the first part, the pervasive humiliation and violence against women in the strongly conservative Romani community of the Finnish Kale escalated into an attempt to rape her, prompting the free-spirited girl to take action. She tries to navigate the gadjo world on her own: first in a children's home, where she voluntarily placed herself, later in a juvenile detention center, and finally in a boarding school. Everywhere she encounters prejudice and racism, but she also meets similarly affected young people who understand her. On her journey through institutions and adolescence, she gradually realizes that she faces another form of exclusion – she is attracted to women. Turbulent events are accompanied in her dreams and visions by her grandmother Emilia, who watches over her from the afterlife in Romani.
The second part of Kiba Lumberg's autobiographical trilogy is as harsh as the environments in which it takes place, yet as fragile and introspective as the narrator's inner self.
