Beschreibung
The novel Candido (1977) presents itself as a remake of Voltaire's 1759 novel Candide, or Optimism. Leonardo Sciascia reprises Voltaire's famous character: the simpleton Candido, a 'noble savage' full of idealistic trust in our world as 'the best of all possible worlds' – a trust that gradually disintegrates in confrontation with reality. Candido, a Sicilian like Sciascia, and thus a child of a very specific cultural zone with a specific moral code and specific patterns of behavior, traverses three decades of Italian post-war development in this travesty and experiences, much like Voltaire's hero, an endless series of disappointments. However, the culmination of this journey is not tragic: Sciascia's Candido, at the end of the novel, distances himself from all ideological myths and intends to let himself be carried away by the irrationality of life's movement – what the ancient Greeks called bios and eros – and to simply be happy in his metaphysical selfishness.
