Beschreibung
The novel René Leys, set in Beijing in 1911, describes through diary entries the narrator's efforts to penetrate the Forbidden City through a young teacher and uncover its secrets. The story plays out a shadow play between the real and the imaginary, where the unknown is an expression of the desire for knowledge, and distance is a necessary condition for meeting. Segalen's work can be read in several ways – as a detective story, an exoticism-inspired novel, prose with autobiographical elements, a tale of friendship, or a fictionalized study of the Middle Kingdom at its turning point.
