At the memorials of those who did not live to see the victorious end and came to us as our liberators, we stood as pioneers and laid flowers for them. We paid our respects to the graves of our own, and we did not ask about the enemy soldiers. Yet here in our beautiful homeland, often in places that are dear to us, those German soldiers lie. Perhaps we walk past their graves without even realizing that they are overgrown with grass and bushes. A barely recognizable mound of earth is a grave from World War II, one that history had to forget.
