In the spring of 1941, Great Britain stood alone against Hitler's Germany. The United States was still neutral. The British RAF was recovering from the bloody slaughter of the Battle of Britain and was slowly beginning to transition to the offensive. In May, a squadron of Hurricanes set out across the Channel for the first time, adorned with a drawing of a boxing American eagle on their noses. The control sticks of the fighters were held by pilots who had arrived in Europe from the United States and voluntarily joined the RAF. They formed the 71st squadron, and this book tells the story of this unit's fate. The 71st RAF squadron became part of the American 8th Air Force in the fall of 1942 and was redesignated as the 334th Fighter Squadron. It gradually became involved in the burgeoning bombing offensive against fascist Germany. It participated in battles against the Luftwaffe during heavy bomber escorts, achieving excellent results, and many famous fighter aces flew in its ranks. The unit fought until the very end of World War II and contributed to its victorious conclusion with more than two hundred enemy aircraft shot down. The end of this most terrible war in human history did not mean the end of the unit's deployment. Soon after the start of the Cold War, it was reactivated, and when the Korean Peninsula erupted...
