It is difficult to talk about the influence of lobbyists on American foreign policy, at least in the mainstream media in the United States, without the person being accused of anti-Semitism or labeled as a self-hating Jew. It is just as difficult to criticize Israeli policies or question support for Israel in polite society. American generous and unconditional support for Israel is rarely mentioned, as groups within the lobby use their power to ensure that public discourse reflects their strategic and moral arguments for the special relationship. The reaction to former President Jimmy Carter's book - Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid perfectly illustrates this phenomenon. Carter's book is a personal plea for renewed American involvement in the peace process, largely based on his considerable experience with these issues over the past three decades. Reasonable people may question his evidence or disagree with his conclusions, but his main goal is peace between these two nations, and Carter unequivocally defends Israel's right to live in peace and security. Yet, even as he suggests that Israeli policies in the occupied territories resemble the apartheid regime of South Africa and publicly states that pro-Israeli groups make it difficult for leaders...
