Her dream of becoming a lawyer and a famous writer by recording her current thought processes on a dictaphone and transcribing them into fictional form collapses because the heroine has a distorted self-image, considering herself more capable than she actually is. On the other hand, she is able to resist various adversities of fate with great determination, whether it is the poor circumstances from which she comes, a strict bigoted Catholic upbringing, or an unwanted pregnancy after her husband's death. The author alternates literary forms and, through a certain disorder in the text, authentically illustrates the confusion, despair, and struggle of an ambitious young woman to maintain her moral integrity and not fall to the very bottom. The book is also a probe into a certain type of American mentality. It forces one to reflect on the role of women in the family and their status in a Christian patriarchal society that shaped the moral values of the American South in the last decades of the last century, and to sharply perceive the boundaries and limits that many of them encountered sooner or later, whether in America or elsewhere in the world.
