Beschreibung
The romantic novel Kornelia's War takes place mainly during the occupation. Its heroine, a young rural woman named Kornelie Hajná, does not have an easy life. Her husband, a fervent communist, left her at the very beginning of the war, and she was left to manage everything on her own. With children and the farm to care for, she is vulnerable and exposed to the curious gazes of neighbors and the all-encompassing fear of the German occupiers. Hatred towards them and a twist of fate lead the heroine to become involved in helping the persecuted, risking her life. Her fear intensifies when an officer from the German occupation garrison begins to court her... The thrilling narrative extends to the threshold of the 1950s, when new builders of happy tomorrows come to the forefront, and the heroine must make another fateful decision. The author intertwines a powerful love story with a striking depiction of the socio-historical circumstances of the time. It can be read as an example of how great history intertwines with the fates of 'small' heroes. At the same time, it is a story of people who resist fate and whose individual lives hold greater value than various impersonal ideologies.
