Three adventurers, writer Věra Nosková, her son Tomáš, a graphic designer and editor at the Klika publishing house, and their friend Martina Gogaisslová set off for Africa to learn about life in relatively safe but poor Tanzania. They wanted to see its national parks, wild animals, and get to know the customs and life of the Maasai tribe. They were also asked by two Czech benefactors, who had funded the construction of a small school in a village with Czech money and support its operation through donations, to find out whether the education was effective and how the sent money was being spent. The authors of the book were surprised by the harsh Maasai patriarchy and the treatment of women and children, which would be punishable by imprisonment in our country. They observed, especially among Tanzanian men, occasionally bizarre ways of making money. Tanzania is a country of children that cannot feed them all. Children under 14 make up 43.5% of the population! In this country, which has 53 million inhabitants, one-tenth of the population is infected with the HIV virus, over three million orphans are struggling to survive, and illiteracy reaches thirty percent. Life is particularly difficult in rural areas. Zanzibar Island, national parks, and some destinations are well-equipped and popular with tourists, but our travelers wanted to see the true face of this large tropical country.
