It was one of the most successful and famous units of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force during World War I. The fighter squadron Flik 55J, mostly stationed at the field airport in Pergine in South Tyrol near Trento, bore the honorary name Imperial Squadron (Kaiserstaffel). Its pilots, often seasoned air aces, achieved more than 30 aerial victories, many of whom came from the territory of today's Czech and Slovak Republics.
