Beschreibung
Hus's Letters from Constance are a selection from the author's prison correspondence, translated into contemporary Czech. In the letters addressed primarily to friends, supporters, and the community of believers he left in Bohemia, Hus speaks not so much as a theologian, but as a human being. As a spiritual shepherd, he encourages his followers to live a good life, but he also reflects on strategies for his defense and expresses his hopes, fears, and struggles. ***** Jan Hus and his teachings have been the subject of many historical and ideological interpretations throughout history, transforming him from a living human being, actively engaged in the struggles of his time, into a somewhat grand but uninteresting monument. However, Hus's letters from the harsh prison, where he suffered both physically and spiritually, testify to human courage, bravery, and the struggle for a clear conscience waged on the brink of death, in a language that can resonate with each of us. ***** Selected, translated into contemporary Czech, and annotated by Alexandr Flek.
